Puella Magi Madoka Magica: the Different Story Review – A-
An alternate timeline of events that also elaborate on Mami and Kyoko’s past relationship.
Of all the Madoka Magica manga adaptations and spin-offs, this is without a doubt the best one. What puts The DIfferent Story above all the others is that it centered on the original cast while not coming off as bad fanfiction like Oriko or Kazumi.
Because it took place in a different timeline, it gave the author creative freedom to tell a narrative that was different from what has previously seen in the anime and other incarnations of the series. And the events stayed true to what fans expect from both the characters and story while also exploring new relationships and outcomes.
The focus on Mami and Kyoko’s past relationship and pasts was excellent and fans should read for this alone. Especially since they were the two main characters who received the least amount of screen time and exposition.
- Story – A-
- Characters – A- – Mami and Kyoko really shone.
- Art – B+ – Not the greatest, but at least everyone has a normal sized head.
- Enjoyment – A
- Overall – A- – I would love to see this as an OVA or something.
Recommendations: Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha A’s

Since Yen Press got Oriko and Kazumi, I hope they license this as well.
