Another Review – D+

This was the best comedy of the season.

Kouichi, a normal young lad, moves to a secluded town. The school there has a terrible secret involving a deceased girl, and Kouichi’s classmates make the wrong decision of refusing to disclose the specifics to him.

I’ve seen all of PA Works’ shows. I’ve hated every single one. This one is also on the list. I hate PA Works. Their ability to make everything look pretty doesn’t make up for their boring stories and mediocre presentation.

The effort Another goes into trying to be scary shows. It wants attention. It wants the entire freaking world to know that it’s horror and then some. In the first few episodes, the music perpetually played and there were constant shots to dolls and it was clearly trying way too hard. As it progressed it learned to silence the music and the dolls stopped appearing at the end of every scene. But that didn’t change the fact that all of the other aspects were unable to harmonize and create something that’s actually scary. The entire show is the epitome of unintentional hilarity and it’s a great comedy for that reason.

To give the show some credit though, the concept with the deceased student was actually interesting. And some of the deaths were quite creative, albeit hilarious. But other than that, I don’t really have anything positive to say about Another. Too many convenieces, whether it be technilogical failures or sudden recollections. Too many pointless things such as the dolls or the pet bird just for the sake of (failed) creepiness.  I wasn’t even satisfied with the ending. Fuck you, PA Works.

  • Story – C – Could’ve been interesting if it wasn’t so boring.
  • Characters – F – Nothing but 1-dimensional stock characters.
  • Art – A – As per usual, P.A. Works makes everything look pretty.
  • Music – B – Pretty good, but very overdramatic.
  • Enjoyment – F
  • Overall – D+

Recommendations: Blood-C, Jigoku Shoujo
