When do I listen to anime music?
Everyone loves anime soundtracks. Some of the greatest songs I’ve ever heard come from anime and they make up approximately 40% of my iPod (iTunes is a different story) as well as most of my Top 25 Most Played. But of course, Japanese music isn’t the only thing I listen to. So how often do I listen to it?
First off, it depends on what mood I’m in, and where I am. My playlist used to help me get to sleep is mostly comprises of instrumentals from both anime and video games. Final Fantasy, Mushishi and Kajiura Yuki soundtracks are great to relax to. The Bebop and Utena scores almost never fail to put me in a better mood.
If I’m feeling sad, angry or some other negative emotion, I will almost never listen to anime music. Usually I’ll put on Paramore or some other alternative/rock or indie artist. It also depends on what I’ve just downloaded. I just bought Adele’s 21 and Florence + the Machine’s Ceremonials and have been listening to both albums almost nonstop.
Of course, I’ll go days listening to only anime tunes. But that hasn’t been the case as of late. Aside from the few recently acquired Symphogear and Nana songs, I’ve been primarily listening to non-Japanese music. Usually I listen to a pretty even balance of both, though.
Just in case anyone’s wondering, here’s a quick list of some of my favorite non-Japanese artists:
- Coeur de pirate
- Florence + the Machine
- Lady Gaga
- Simon & Garfunkel
I also listen to a crap load of showtunes.
